Golf & Disability

by Danilo Redaelli (2003)

The practice of team sport activities is one of the most effective means of social integration and active life revaluation for disabled people.

Golf, giving the chance to create teams in which disabled and non-disabled subjects are at the same level of fun and competition, makes real those communication and socialization opportunities that make the disabled aware of his physical abilities, that are usually bigger than how they can imagine.

We also know that a golf course is an environment structured following defined logistical features and every hole has some particular and unchangable elements that identify its shape: lenght, average running time, natural features and geometry are some of the many characteristics that are to be kept in consideration.

It's been certified that a course, beside the features concerning the game, has to include morphologic, dimensional and functional particulars in order to allow everyone to play easily. From these points, grows the idea of writing a work that, starting from general purposes about the relationships between golf and disability, gives some suggestions concerning the project and realisation of man-shaped facilities, whether the subject is normal or disabled.
